MusselsAlive at the ISA meeting
The Irish shellfish growers met in Kinsale on the the 22nd of October to attend the Irish Shellfish Association annual meeting (ISA). This was the perfect scenario to present the MusselsAlive project and the latest findings.
ISA is a partner in this European Project, and Richie Flynn invited Sara Barrento from Swansea University, to do an oral presentation not only to promote the project, but also to invite mussel farmers to answer a questionnaire about mussel production and common practices used by the industry. The main aim is to characterize the trade chain of live mussels and identify constrains and critical points. Similar questionnaires had already been done in Norway during August-September, 2011) and in Scotland during the Scottish Shellfish Growers Association conference meeting (October, 2011).This will help to establish new knowledge of best practice for optimal handling of live commodity from harvest to market. Data and findings from the project will be available to all Association members. You can check the PowerPoint-presentation here .
You can also read about the project in the newsletter for the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers, "The Grower" in the issues from July and October 2011.
